COSPLAY: Team Valor’s Candela from Pokémon Go

Will be spending the rest of the holiday season trying to finish all the blogging backlogs I have! Wish me luck!

Back in October, our company had our quarterly townhall and decided to make Pokemon as the theme of the event. Now I wasn’t really a big fan of Pokemon, and while I did spend a few months playing Pokemon Go, it quickly lost its magic on me. However, I did want to participate for my team. It was a pretty easy decision choosing to cosplay Candela over all the characters, because 1) Her philosophy resonated most with me, which was why I was Team Valor, and 2) Her costume was easy to pull off.

Long story short, well, I was just a supporting character then, and we didn’t win the townhall event, but we’ll be sure to win next time!

I did have a blast cosplaying again after so long.

“I am Candela – Team Valor’s leader! Pokémon are stronger than humans, and they’re warmhearted, too! I’m researching ways to enhance Pokémon’s natural power in the pursuit of true strength. There’s no doubt that the Pokémon our team trained are the strongest in battle! Are you ready?”

I think what I like best about Team Valor is their perseverance and persistence. Contrary to popular belief, they’re not ruthlessly aggressive. However, they can be competitive and fierce when it comes to their goals. (I think at this point, you can already tell that Candela was my only choice when I was thinking of which character to cosplay.)

They value strength and power, and believe that training is the key to becoming stronger and more powerful. While not as wildly popular as Team Mystic, I think Team Valor holds up in its own way.

More details on the costume: This was literally easy to put together, given that I have found someone selling her Candela jacket online. All that was left for me to fix was the wig, the pokeball (available at Greenhills for 50 pesos), a pair of black tights, a black turtle-neck, and a pair of white gloves. The white gloves I had to paint the fingers red.

I think the biggest challenge for me in cosplaying Candela would be making my cheeks smaller. Candela has a really small face, kind of heart-shaped, which I was not blessed with. Thanks to the power of contouring, I was able to make my face seem smaller!

I didn’t really plan well for this cosplay as this was just something I put together two days before the event, so please forgive me if I got a lot of details wrong! I will do my best to refine this even more in the coming months ;)-HANA
