Review: Ippudo Philippines (SM Megamall, Mandaluyong City)

This isn’t exactly a proper review, since it has been a while since my last visit, and for the life of me, I couldn’t remember anything remarkable about the food or the place. I held on to my love for Ramen Nagi, even as I was already in the restaurant, eating my bowl of ramen. Hence, you might find this review biased, but I will try to be as objective as I can.

From Ippudo Philippines’ website, we get a short introduction to the brand and its roots:

IPPUDO was founded in 1985 in Japan’s ramen capital of Hakata by Shigemi Kawahara, the internationally renowned Ramen King. There are over 80 stores in Japan, and globally in places such as New York, Singapore, Hong Kong, South Korea, Taiwan, China, Sydney and Malaysia. IPPUDO has become the most popular ramen restaurant over the years.

With the way my friends rave about Ippudo, I can tell that a lot of people enjoy their ramen varieties. I ordered a Karaka Chashu-men, but did not find the taste or noodle quality noteworthy. If anything, it was salty, which was why I did not attempt to finish the soup anymore. To me, a great bowl of ramen is one you can down, noodle, soup, and all. This was not the case with my particular bowl of Ippudo Ramen when I last dined there.

I should probably try the other varieties before writing Ippudo Ramen off my list, but with Ramen Nagi and Ikkoryu as my go-to places for my ramen fix, I don’t see the appeal of Ippudo at all. Lastly, I am not a huge fan of that thing dividing the tables. I know that they were going for authenticity and all, but it’s just so difficult to talk to each other with that thing blocking the view. This is especially true for huge groups (more than four people). You have to peer through the holes to look at the person you’re talking to on the other side of the “fence.”

This obnoxious metal fence =))

Amused myself with a friend’s drawing of Doge on the feedback form =))

I am likely to come back, but not for their expensive bowl of mediocre ramen. I guess it just wasn’t able to live up to the hype. I am not a huge fan, but I want to see if they have other offers that I can like.-HANA
