T’was the night before the deadline of SM Supermalls’ Merry SM Christmas blogger contest, and I still didn’t have an entry. It was taking me way too long to organize my thoughts that I even considered giving up entirely.
So there I was, ready to call it a night and throw in the towel. As I lay in my bed, I wondered exactly how it was possible that three simple questions could prove to be so hard for me to answer:
- What is your Christmas wish list for yourself?
- What are your Christmas gift ideas for your loved ones this year?
- How do you plan to give back to others this Christmas?
I was so lost in thought, with my head resting on my pillow and my eyes shut, that I didn’t even realize that I was beginning to doze off.
I remember gently waking up to a cool breeze in my room. I slowly opened my eyes, and two thoughts came to my mind: that the three figures flying around my bed looked an awful like the fairy godmothers from Sleeping Beauty, and that I should get up and make a sandwi-
“What the hell?!” I sat up, wide-eyed, realizing exactly what I was looking at. That’s it, no more potato chips and sour cream dip before bedtime.
“Do not be afraid,” said the kindest-looking (and plumpest) one of the three. “We are here to help you come up with an entry for the contest!”
“And to refresh your memory about the contest, too!” said the tallest one. At that point, she pulled out a magic wand – from where, I could only guess – and, with a wave of her hand, seemingly conjured up this poster out of thin air:
“Okay, I’m not sure what that was for,” I said, brushing some hair out of my face. “Thanks, I guess?”
“What that was for,” said the shortest one, “was MOTIVATION! See those awesome promos and discounts? That should get you in the mood for some holiday shopping! So come on, let’s get to work!”
Kind Fairy went first. “Okay, try to answer this one, come on. You know the answers are in your head. What is your Christmas wish list for yourself?”
Without batting an eyelash, I began to enumerate the things I wanted to buy. “Uh, let’s see. Shoes, makeup brushes, clothes. Typical girly stuff.”
“See, that was easy!” Tall Fairy beamed. “Next up: What are your Christmas gift ideas for your loved ones this year?”
I took a while to ponder this question, but not that long – I already had some ideas, after all. “I would give gifts depending on what my loved ones would want, because I know what would make them happy. For example, I know that my mother would really appreciate an oven. My father would love- wait, scratch that, he needs new shoes. Maybe I could give both of them a ticket for a weekend getaway or something. My boyfriend will probably get a couple of fiction novels, or that Spider-Man bag he’s been eyeing for the longest time now. I’ve already got ideas for my friends, too.”
“The great thing about this line of work is that I become more knowledgeable about where I can go to find the best deals – thanks to my blogging activities, I won’t have a hard time shopping for my loved ones. Of course, the SM Supermall nearest to my area probably already has everything I need, anyway, so I doubt that I’d have a hard time looking.”
“Thank you for that wonderful answer, Candidate #3!” Short Fairy said jestingly.
“Hey, you’re supposed to be helping me, not mocking me!”
“Sorry, I couldn’t resist. Besides, you walked right into that one. Anyway, there’s one more question that you have to answer: How do you plan to give back to others this Christmas?”
Before she could even finish the question, though, I already knew what to say. “Where do I start?” I said. “With the recent weather catastrophes that devastated our countrymen, such as Typhoon Lando in Nueva Ecija, I feel that the best thing I can do is to help out in the relief efforts in whatever way I can. In addition to donating food and supplies, I’ll also write about them, either on my blog or on my social media accounts, to raise awareness about how everyone else can help, too.”
As it turns out, I wasn’t finished yet. “SM has this yearly drive called the SM Cares Bears of Joy campaign (http://smcares.com.ph/newsevents/?p=993) – I think that’s definitely something worth joining. However, I believe that the best give I can give to others is one that allows me to use my skills to promote a worthy cause to a wider audience. I would take the time to interview and feature a local charity/orphanage/NGO on my blog, preferably an organization that is relevant to my followers and target audience.”
At that point, the fairies giggled, joined their hands, and spun around my bed until I felt dizzy. Two seconds later, I found myself lying in bed once again, but this time with a blog post in mind and a smile on my face.
