Gourmet Food and Craft Beer Pairing at The Perfect Pint (BGC, Taguig City)

A few weeks ago, I was given the opportunity to enjoy a night of food and craft beer pairing at The Perfect Pint. Practically uninitiated to the rich flavors of local craft beers (save for the one time I tried out Katipunan Craft Beer for the very first time), I had no idea what to expect. Most restaurants offer food and wine pairing, but this is the first time I’ve heard of food and craft beer pairing. There was absolutely no reason not to jump at the opportunity to try this one-of-a-kind experience for myself.

Any misconceptions of The Perfect Pint selling ice cream goes away the moment you step into the establishment. Row after row of beer bottles lined up neatly on the shelves against the wall, and even their rustic make-shift chandeliers hanging overhead are made of bottles. The interiors are practically screaming, “Prepare to get drunk!” What sets The Perfect Pint from all other watering holes is that they feature local craft beers, and in a way, help local craft breweries in growing and sustaining their businesses. Craft beer breweries have gained popularity because of their commitment to delivering richer flavor that breweries of mass-produced beers have come to neglect in favor of affordability. A year ago, local craft beers were a rare commodity. Now, they’re not as rare, especially now with gastropubs like the Perfect Pint that have made it their mission to bring awareness to this growing industry.

The Perfect Match

I chanced upon the first leg of The Perfect Match, a special event organized by the brains behind The Perfect Pint, which has brought food connoisseurs and beer enthusiasts together for a celebration of the perfect food and craft beer pairings. The first leg featured four renowned chefs, each concocting a special dish to match their choice of craft beer from the pub. For only Php 550, guests are treated to small servings of four food and craft beer pairings. At the end of the meal, participants are asked to rank the four dishes based on their preference, and how well the dishes either complemented each other. Unfortunately, because I am writing this a month after the first leg started, the four-week event is now over. We can only hope that the organizers come up with something similar for many who are interested in the pairing experience.

I call this “The Uninitiated’s Crash Course in Craft Beers”

They say that craft beers won’t get you drunk. After four shots of strong liquor, downing each between bites, I can safely say that it got me tipsy but hardly with any difficulties getting home. I am partial to the Wheat Beer because of its light and smooth flavor. Everything else was too “dad drink” for me. However, I would love to come back for the wheat beers sometime soon!

Even without The Perfect Match event, you can come enjoy their various gourmet meals and request assistance from their staff on which craft beers you should match with your choice of food. They can help you choose based on your mood, your personality, liquor strength, or flavor preference. Whatever reason you may have for getting one foot in the door at The Perfect Pint, they have a craft beer to suit you. -HANA
