#HootUpMNL

Last June 27, the first ever HootUpMNL gathered together social media enthuasiasts, Hootsuite ambassadors, bloggers, and anyone and everyone under the addictive influence of the world wide web. It was an intimate meetup at A Space Manila organized by The K Squad and spearheaded by my blogger friend and founder of The K Squad, Kei San Pablo. Since I only recently became a Hootsuite Ambassador myself and this is the first time that we’re having a HootUp in Manila, I had no clue as to what to expect. Turns out, the K Squad, as well as everyone who made the first ever HootUpMNL possible, planned a fun night that would set the bar high for future HootUps to come.

The organizers made sure that we were all going home with so much learnings from our resource speakers. Ms. Lace Llanera of Vanilla Digital talked about how Hootsuite has helped their social media team engage better with their client’s communities, and focused even more on what Social Media should be all about. My favorite take-away from her talk was, “Don’t settle for canned responses. Listen. Understand. Engage.”

Speakers for the night: Ros Juan, founder of TweetUpMNL and CEO of Commune, and Lace Llanera, Co-founder of Vanilla Digital

On the other hand, Ms. Ros Juan, CEO of Commune and founder of TweetUpMNL discussed the importance of meeting online communities offline, and highlighted that with offline meetups, rapport is built and connections are made stronger. Ms Juan said, “Beyond the selling and promotion, social media is all about people and relationships, and what you do with those relationships is up to you.”

Afterwards, we got to interact with the other participants over a pizza party of sorts. I was very happy to finally meet Ms. Grace Nicolas for the first time, who I’ve been connected with online for a while now. I was also grateful to be given the opportunity to ask Kei and Ms. Lace a few questions about HootUpMNL, since I’m looking forward to organizing a HootUp in the coming months.

Remember the Owly mask earlier? We were tasked to color it as creatively as possible. Little did I know that the five participants with the most creative masks will win a prize. I was lucky to be chosen Owly of the night because of my Owly mask!

Aaand, a closer look at the Owly mask I made. How many social media platforms can you find?

More than the prizes that I won, I got to meet a lot of like-minded people (shout-out to Alvin Chan and Joey Alarilla) who are just as passionate about social media as I am. I encourage everyone to take part of the regular TweetUps and HootUps because you get to expand your circle, as well as participate in the exchange of information. I will probably be a mainstay in the future HootUps, and very excited to be organizing my very own HootUpMNL in the coming months.-HANA
