The Dolby Atmos technology at the New Promenade Cinemas, Greenhills

Last weekend, I got to experience firsthand Dolby Atmos, the groundbreaking sound technology that will revolutionize the way we appreciate movies. The technology debuted in the Philippines almost a year ago, and the new Promenade Cinemas at the Greenhills Shopping Center got first dibs on the exciting art sound technology.

Before we get into the details of what makes Dolby Atmos so special, let’s take a quick look at the new Promenade cinemas in Greenhills. This is actually my first time to catch a movie at this cinema, so I was able to appreciate every detail I found unique to it when compared to the more popular cinemas like SM Cinemas and Robinsons Movieworld, among others. The Promenade Cinema had a spacious lobby area with seats available for waiting guests. One of my favorite details was the film reel design on the walls overhead, displaying a photo of the Academy Awards (more commonly referred to as “The Oscars”) Best Picture winners. All these movies influenced storytelling through the cinematic medium over the years. Take note of which movies you’ve already seen, and which ones you’ve yet to see. It’s a great way to kill time while waiting for your movie schedule.

The Ticket Booth

Exploring the inside of the new Promenade cinemas led us to discover the different features of Dolby Atmos, and why cinemas with Dolby Atmos are slowly becoming the preferred cinemas to watch movies in. Without yet getting into the technicalities of the technology, Dolby Atmos makes sound come to life by allowing you to hear the sound from where they are actually coming from. With regular cinemas, you will note that the sound comes from in front or behind the audience, either side, or above. With the positional sound system that is Atmos, the sound effect accomplished is positional as well. It can even drive the sound across the hall, with a smooth, natural transition. The sound registers to the audience as more realistic, making the audience feel as if they were part of the scene, thus, providing a movie experience that cannot be matched.

It’s not only the sound technology that will keep you looking forward to the Dolby Atmos at the new Promenade cinemas — even the size of the screens are also bigger! The screen would remind you of a mini-Imax, with the way it covers the space from wall to wall, and spread side-to-side.

“We wanted to bring back some of the elegance of movie theaters during the grand old days of cinema when movie houses were stand-alone and had murals and art pieces for décor. Moviegoers then surely had a grand feeling when going to the movies. This is the reason why we brought the finest art into the new thdeaters at the Promenade and why the three new cinemas are fitted with state of the art Dolby Atmos technology. We hope in the near future more cinemas will follow suit to give movie goers the wonderful experience of watching movies in the best way they can,” said Precy Florentino, president of the Music Museum Group, Inc.which runs Greenhills Cinemas.

I loved the the arm rests can be raised :D Also, the huge cinema chairs were as comfy as they can get!

We got to watch “The Edge of Tomorrow” during our visit at the new Promenade cinemas, and experienced the Dolby Atmos technology for ourselves. Starring Tom Cruise and Emily Blunt, ‘The Edge of Tomorrow” is an action-packed movie with an interesting story line that would keep you at the edge of your seat. Watching The Edge of Tomorrow at the Dolby Atmos cinemas couldn’t be more perfect, as blockbuster movies such as this will be appreciated better with the sound technology that only the revolutionary technology can offer.

I can’t wait for my next movie experience at the New Promenade Cinemas! I’m looking forward to seeing Transformers: Age of Extinction (which is showing this month!) and Lucy (set to be released in July 2014) at the Dolby Atmos cinemas very soon.-HANA
