At Kodanda Archery Range in Makati Cinema Square, Makati City

I was challenged by friends from the Kodanda Archery Range to learn how to properly use a bow in shooting an arrow into the air. It wasn’t a difficult decision. After all, I’ve been a fan of Katniss Everdeen (The Hunger Games), Daryl Dixon (Walking Dead), Oliver Queen / Green Arrow (Arrow), Artemisia (300: Rise of an Empire), and many other skilled archers portrayed in movies and TV series. I’m pretty sure that with all the influence from media, the bow and arrow would be a popular weapon of choice in the event of a zombie apocalypse. But really, how hard can it be to shoot an arrow with a bow?

So I accepted the challenge (and even dressed the part!) one hot Friday morning and went to Kodanda Archery Range. If you’ve even been watching anime series on TV when you were younger, it would not have taken you long (I hope!) to recognize I was cosplaying Chacha from the anime, Akazukin Chacha. She has her Beauty Serene Arrow as her weapon of choice, before she moved on to stronger weapons. I was really racking my brains out for a character I can dress up as who uses a bow, and while she’s not the perfect choice (because her bow and arrows are magical and they don’t require skill to hit the target), I wanted to be Chacha for one day :p

It was hilarious for me and my friend, Kana, seeing Chacha learning how to shoot a bow like a regular person! From wearing shooting accessories, learning how to properly hold a bow and putting an arrow in place, to releasing the string, we made Chacha looked like a total noob.

Kodanda Archery Range is a fully air-conditioned archery range with seven 10-meter lanes to accommodate seven people at a time. I was also told that their rates are very affordable, considering that the rental rates are inclusive of the equipment already.

Learning to pull my arrows from the board

Why Archery? Other than the fact that we want to channel our favorite bow-users, archery is a good sport to dabble into. It helps improve hand-eye coordination as well as focus, and even patience! They even teach you the proper stance, so with practice, posture is also positively affected by the training. Plus, I think it’s also a cool and competitive activity you can do with your friends or even teammates at work.

I found that even if Jennifer Lawrence, Norman Reedus and Stephen Amell make it look so easy on the big screen and the boob tube, using a bow is no easy feat. It’s heavy and it’s difficult to hold steadily with one hand. Even stretching the string to your chin puts stress on my arms and chest, and doing that while focusing on a target ten meters away from you is really difficult. At one point, I was taking too long in releasing the string and making the arrow fly into the air because I wasn’t quite sure if I’ve focused it properly already. There was even a time I didn’t hit the board at all, and another when I finally hit bullseye but my arrow fell to the ground (fail!). And I know it’s going to take more than one session to get me warmed up, or anywhere remotely near to my favorite archers’ skill.

Getting my A-game and putting my game face on.

By the way, you don’t have to be in costume to learn archery at Kodanda Archery Range in Makati. Come as you are as long as you’re wearing rubber shoes! It’s actually better if you’re wearing comfortable clothes than wearing a costume like I did, because the costume got in the way of my shooting.

Price: Php 550 / person per hour, inclusive of use of archery range, equipment and rental gear, as well as coaching on archery basics by expert instructors. If you’re interested in really getting into the sport, Kodanda Archery Range offers lessons for Php 6000 inclusive of ten one-hour sessions featuring dedicated coaching. The sessions will even be adjusted to fit the schedule of the student. The best part is you’ll be rewarded with a Certificate of Completion once you finish the ten sessions.
