Review: Eat-All-You-Can Barbecue at Bar-B-Skew

Growing up with overprotective parents, I was hardly able to enjoy street foods such as fish ball, squid ball, barbecue, when I was younger. My parents always feared for the worst when it comes to eating food peddled by street vendors. While kids my age enjoyed their share of street food every afternoon after classes are dismissed, I only get to eat them when my mom prepares these foods herself. Despite the popularity of street foods in the Philippines, there are still many of us who are unable to enjoy them without worrying about the hygienic and proper handling of these street foods.

Thankfully, a few of my blogger friends introduced me to Bar-B-Skew, a Southeast Asian-inspired street food hub located at the corner of Timog Ave. and Tomas Morato in Quezon City. Open from 11 AM – 2 AM from Sunday to Thursday and until 4 AM during Fridays and Saturdays, Bar-B-Skew is especially perfect for those with late night cravings for all things grilled.

The setup reminded me of Korean barbecue places wherein the grill is incorporated into the table’s design, with an overhead exhaust to take care of the smoke. Except with this one, it’s charcoal powered than electric. During your stay in Bar-B-Skew, you have three stops you can make before returning to settle on your seats. First is the table for condiments and sauces, located on your left when you’re facing the counter. It has numerous choices of sauces you can use to add flavor to your skewer and plastic brushes on hand for applying the sauce. The said table also holds napkin holders, drinking cups and pitchers of cold drinking water.

Your second stop is the food display glass cabinet where 12 skewer choices are located. The popular ones are of course, the isaw, pork barbecue, and gizzard. The more unusual choices are corn, saba, cream dory, and marshmallows. Grab a plate and get only wha tyou can consume. Another helpful tip would be to get the isaw and cream dory first because they take more time to grill and be fully cooked.

Your third stop is a table located at the right of the glass display cabinet. It’s an extension of the buffet, for those who availed the Eat-all-you-can promo. When you avail of the said promo, you also get to enjoy unlimited rice, as well as the sides and viands served on that table. When we were there, they served kangkon and coleslaw for sides, and sisig and fried chicken for the viand.

Putting the charcoal on the grill

When you get back to your table, a Bar-B-Skew attendant will assist you by putting the charcoal on the grill, as well as turning on the fan for the charcoal, the vent, and the gear mechanism which will cause the skewers to rotate and cook evenly.

While waiting for your skewers to be cooked, there’s always the Wi-Fi to keep you busy, and lots of power outlets should you have the need to charge.

Here’s a good look of some of the skewers we had that night:

Grill-happy

I am officially a Skewer monster!

You’d be surprised by the number of skewers I had that night. I wasn’t able to keep count, because the attendants were quick to free our table of the used metal skewers. But I had the chance to list some of them down and here they are:

  • 6 Isaw
  • 2 Pork Isaw
  • 2 Liver
  • 1 Gizzard
  • 1 Cream Dory
  • 2 Pork Barbecue
  • 5 Marshmallows

For a total of.. 19 skewers! Who would have thought that I had the appetite that much? I definitely got my my money’s worth that day!

Marshmallow nom nom

I enjoyed grilling the marshmallows until they were soft and with every bite, my teeth just sinks into their soft fluffiness effortlessly. A word of caution, though. Don’t leave the marshmallows in the grill for too long, or else..

THIS.

Don’t even dare leave for the CR while your marshmallows are on the grill. It will melt, or worse, burn. :))

Like I always say, buffets are best enjoyed in the company of friends. The buffet period only lasts ninety minutes, but having a friendly competition among your friends on who can eat the most skewers will make that ninety minutes more exciting, and will ensure that you get more value for your money. I think it’s needless to say that I won this one (but let me gloat, so whatever).

My face when I won our little challenge

For an affordable price of Php 299 for the lunch buffet, and Php 349 for the dinner buffet, you get to enjoy Bar-B-Skew as much as we did. If, for one reason or another, you don’t really have time to hang around for ninety minutes and enjoy the buffet, there are Sulit meals, which start at Php 79, and Skewer Packs which start at Php 139. The experience of grilling your own food was awesome and convenient (because you can easily reheat your food when it gets cold or feel it’s undercooked), and I’d love to do it again with another group of friends next time! -HANA
