Yabu: The House of Katsu Opens at SM North EDSA

Now operating its fifth branch, Yabu: The House of Katsu has finally started their operations at SM North of EDSA to cater to Katsu-crazy fans of the north.

Last August 27, Yabu: The House of Katsu opened their doors to northern foodies with an incredible promo: FREE Katsu meals to the first 100 customers. The response was amazing: a long line of excited, famished customers awaited their turn and took a chance to become one of the first 100 customers to eat a katsu meal for FREE.

On August 28, Yabu: The House of Katsu celebrated the opening of their fifth branch with a blessing of the branch, and a formal ribbon cutting.

Social media raves for Yabu: The House of Katsu

When you enter their small toilet space, you’ll be surprised and overwhelmed by the amount of media raves, from traditional to online media, posted on the walls.

Beverages: Mango Juice and Water

There were a lot of customers that night, mostly VIPs and friends from the media invited to celebrate the inauguration of Yabu’s fifth branch. Despite the influx of customers, the Yabu staff was able to deliver our orders within twenty minutes!

Not pictured here (because my phone’s battery got drained early during the night) was our appetizer: a combination of Wakame (seaweed that’s sweet and juicy topped with fish roe, or ebiko) and Superior Potato and Egg Salad, priced at Php195. The Wakame was surprisingly good. I’ve never tasted anything like it before, since the only seaweed I’m familiar with is Nori (dried seaweed). There are three appetizer combos offered in Yabu’s menu, and if you’re not sure what to get, order this bestseller.

My Katsu Sauce: Happier with chili powder

While waiting for our meals to be served, we ground the sesame seeds and prepared our katsu sauce. I really love mine with chili powder, though the chili powder doesn’t make it really spicy the way I want it to be. The chili powder would only provide the katsu sauce mix a hint of spice.

My Kurobuta Katsu Meal Set (Php 570 for the 120g, Php 515 for the 90g)

Just like all the other Katsu Sets, it comes with a bowl of Koshihikari (fragrant Japanese) rice, Miso soup, a serving of cabbage, sides, fruits, and of course, your choice of Katsu.

My choice of Katsu: the Kurobuta Premium Set

Tender, juicy, flavor: three words to describe what is considered to be The High King of Katsu, the Kurobuta Premium. The Kurobuta, or the black Berkshire pig when translated into English, is considered to be the world’s best pork. Highly recommended and a must0try when in Yabu.

Miso soup: have you tried their bottomless miso?

Sides: Cucumber and sweet Japanese pickles, plus slices of pineapple and watermelon.

Yabu is killing my diet! I love their katsu dripping with katsu sauce, then enjoyed with a mouthful of rice or cabbage!

Yabu only offers one dessert on their menu: the Choco Lava topped with Vanilla Ice Cream for Php 155.

Choco Lava cake with Vanilla Ice cream on top

Kimmi, Aldous and I were already so full, that we decided to share this plate of Choco Lava Cake. This delectable piece of cake is like no other cake: it was as if the cake was entirely made of soft fudge. The cake was so soft, it melts on your tongue. Delicious and creamy, and most perfect with that scoop of vanilla ice cream on top.

Yabu’s Feedback form

So this is my third time in Yabu in the last two weeks, my second time was two days before this event. I’m kinda literally high on the Katsu sauce and the pork goodness of all the katsu I’ve been eating. I can practically become a Yabu online ambassador now for all the times I’ve written about Yabu (yes, thrice in three weeks). While the SM North EDSA doesn’t have anything special about it compared to Yabu’s SM Megamall branch, there was one thing that I found remarkable during my dining experience at the SM North EDSA: a standout Yabu server named Jam Blauta.

From the start, Jam was already very quick to assist. It was easy to call on him and remember his name. Whenever we need something, he was always quick to rush to our table and help us with practically anything. Remember my phone died down on me early during dinner? Well, I was lucky I got it charged to take photos of the food when it finally came, thanks to Jam. While the SM North EDSA does not have any outlets or sockets for the use of their customers (to my disappointment), Jam was able to find a way to charge my phone. When I needed the password to the wifi, Jam was there to assist. When my friend sent me an SMS asking me to buy him a Yabu Shirt, Jam was very helpful in informing me that they did not have that particular design in the size of my friend. He got my number instead and told me that he’ll forward it to their main office so that they can contact me once the shirt my friend wanted is available in his size. I don’t think customer service can get any better than this: convenient, simple, quick. Kimmi and I couldn’t stop talking about how much we appreciate Jam’s enthusiasm. It’s rare to find people passionate about their work and going for that extra mile every chance they get. Jam’s a treasure.
