Symposium on Transforming Business Performance Investors in People Standard

Held last September 5, 2013 at the SGV Hall of the AIM Conference Center, the Symposium on Transforming Business Performance Investors in People Standard was attended by a handful of eager participants interested to know more about how investing in people can improve business and translate to results.

The symposium was hosted by Mr. Boris Joaquin, the President of Breakthrough Leadership Management Consultancy. Mr. Gerry Plana and Ms. Janet Webster-Watson were the speakers in the symposium.

The Challenge of Managing People Better by Mr. Gerry Esplana

One of the symposium’s resource speaker was Chief Executive of Investors in People Philippines Mr. Gerry Esplana. Mr. Esplana talked about how business owners would rather invest in tangibles than intangibles. “People are expensed, not capitalized,” says Mr. Esplana during his discussion of  the topic, The Challenge of Managing People Better. The lack of training, Short Term vs Long Term Mentality, Corrective vs Preventive Mindset, and the lack of metrics in measuring employee and people performance are just some of the challenges met when making the decision to invest in people.

Surprisingly, access to materials and consultation goes as low as Php 5,000/ year. That is very cheap considering how much investing in people and fixing people issues can improve your business and translate to profit. Some of the IiP accredited organizations include St. Like’s Medical Center Global City and Quezon City, Cardinal Santos Medical Center, Lyceum of the Philippines University in Laguna, Batangas, and Manila, as well as Bayan Telecommunications and the British Council.

In closing, I’d like to leave this very striking statement from Mr. Gerry Esplana. During his talk, he mentioned, “Training is expensive. Why don’t you try ignorance? Let’s see which is more expensive.”-HANA
